When R-Truth joined the Pro Wrestling Federation (PWF) as a promoter, he began his professional wrestling career in 1997. Manny Fernandez and trained with him. R-Truth made he was awarded the NWA Wildside Television Championship and NWA Wildside debut as K-Krush in 1999.

R-Truth signed a two-year developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment in 1999 under the name ring K-Kwik. R-Truth was assigned to its developmental territory Memphis Championship Wrestling.
